How to edit a UGC ad in CapCut in 15 minutes

Step by step from downloaded reaction clip to exported, ready-to-post video: cuts, on-screen text, auto captions, audio and the export settings that matter.

Editing time is what decides whether you post one video a week or ten. This is the 15-minute flow that turns a downloaded reaction clip plus a screen recording into a finished ad in CapCut, which is free and runs on both phone and desktop.

Before you open the editor: gather three pieces

  • The reaction clip, in the emotion that matches your promise.
  • A screen recording of your product doing the most impressive thing it does, with no intro.
  • The hook line written out, 8 words maximum.

Open CapCut without those three ready and editing time triples. Volume production is organization, not editing talent.

Step by step (15 minutes)

  • 1. Create a 9:16 project and drag the reaction clip onto the timeline. Trim it to the peak of the expression only, somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds.
  • 2. Butt the screen recording right after it, no transition. A hard cut beats any effect.
  • 3. Speed the screen recording up 1.5x or 2x. Nobody wants to watch a loading spinner in real time.
  • 4. Add the hook text over the reaction clip. Heavy font, white, black outline, upper half of the screen.
  • 5. Run auto captions if there is speech, then check product names and numbers, which is where transcription fails.
  • 6. Add a low-volume music bed (10% to 20%) so the two clips feel continuous.
  • 7. Write the closing call in text over the last couple of seconds: what the person should do now.
  • 8. Export at 1080x1920, 30fps, high quality. No editor watermark.

The settings that change the result most

  • Reaction clip volume: keep the original audio at low volume even when there is no speech. Total silence feels artificial.
  • Safe zone: leave roughly 15% clear at the bottom and top, and keep the right-hand strip clear too. That is where the app's buttons and caption sit.
  • Total length: aim for 12 to 22 seconds organically. Short videos finish, and finished videos get re-served.
  • First frame: the face has to be visible at frame zero. A fade-in is retention thrown away.

Turning 1 edit into 10 without redoing everything

Once the first video is done, duplicate the project. Swap only the reaction clip and the hook line, keeping the screen recording, the music and the ending. Each duplicate takes 2 to 3 minutes, which puts ten variations inside one afternoon.

Post them with file names that say which variation is which (shock-01, laugh-02). Without that, two weeks later you no longer know which hook produced which result, and the whole test becomes an anecdote.

Frequently asked questions about editing UGC

Do I need a paid editor to make UGC ads?
No. Free CapCut handles trimming, text, auto captions and 1080x1920 export. A paid editor only pays off once you have a winning format and want to automate batch production.
What is the ideal length for a UGC video?
12 to 22 seconds for organic, and 15 to 30 seconds for paid ads that need more explanation. What decides performance is not the length itself but whether the video gets watched to the end.
Should I add captions even without speech?
Yes, at least for the hook line and the closing call. A large share of the audience watches muted, so whatever is not written does not exist.
How do I export without losing quality?
Export at 1080x1920, 30fps and the highest bitrate the editor allows. Avoid re-exporting an already exported file: every pass recompresses the image and eats the detail in your screen recording.
